GATHERING OF FISHERIES II
With spring upon us and the Northeast's marine migrations in full swing it is time to celebrate what for the island of Manhattan is the most local food
of all: seafood. And so at this, our second Gathering of Fisheries, we will once again bring local and regional fish and shellfish vendors, fishermen,
distributors, chefs, advocates, writers, and other supporters of a revived Fulton Fish Market to Lower Manhattan to celebrate our coasts and the bounty they provide.
Visitors to the May 20th market can purchase fish and shellfish to cook at home, learn fish cutting, cleaning, and cooking techniques from expert
chefs, and enjoy a variety of seafood preparations |
while strolling aroundthe market and learning about the issues surrounding our evolving relationship with the waterways and their potential to feed us.
FISH MARKET DEMO KITCHEN
Stop by our demonstration area at the center of the fish market stalls from 12-4pm. Chef Dave Vacca of Bridge Restaurant in Westerly, Rhode Island will give a demonstration on how to prepare fluke crudo at 1pm and Chef April Blommfield of John Dory Oyster Bar will offer some helpful tips on creating beautiful cuts of fish at 2pm.
Nearby at Gabe the Fish Babe stall children will have the opportunity to make artistic prints by painting whole fish and rubbing the scales onto sheets of paper. Stop by throughout the day to make your own creation.
MEET THE FISH WRITERS
All day long, stop by the Piermont Straus bookstall to pick up books on fish, fisheries, fish cooking, marine ecosystems and more, and meet authors like Paul Greenberg, Carl Safina, and others.
